Can You Help Your Sinuses By Eating?

Most people do not pay even a little bit of mind to their sinuses until something starts to go wrong with them. Clogged sinuses can a be very painful thing to experience and they could make a flu or a cold even harder to get through. Most of us try and take care of our sinus issues with prescription drugs or steam but the real truth is that the things we eat can also have a dramatic effect on those tiny passageways in our skulls. So how can food help you take care of your sinuses well? Keep reading to learn the different affects that foods can have on your sinus passageways.

If you start to have issues with your sinuses, you need to keep away from milk and other dairy products. Dairy products easily activate the manufacturing of mucous and phlegm. This stuff will work its way from the rest of your body–your lungs and stomach into your sinuses and keep them from being able to drain properly. These sorts of blockages might help breed all sorts of different bacteria that will only help you stay sick. This is the reason that the majority of milk products should be avoided altogether when you are ill–the phlegm gets built up in your body making your cough worse and making you sicker than you want to be.

Some people believe that eating spicy foods, for instance horseradish, wasabi and other spices can be a great help when they suffer from sinus problems. This can certainly truly help you thin out the mucous that has piled up in your system, give you a seriously wicked runny nose and a little bit of temporary relief. When you suffer from things such as heartburn or acid reflux, however, this solution could be detrimental because the regurgitated stomach acid could find its way up into your sinuses and cause some tremedously difficult problems for you.

If you are struggling with sinus problems you should probably not drink any alcohol. Alcohol leads to dehydration and dehydration can lead to the solidifying or even hardening of the mucous within you, including in your sinuses. This causes your sinuses to get clogged and pretty much undrainable so, even though alcohol may be able to help you sleep, it could also be prolonging your illness. Tea, alternatively, could be really really beneficial. Hot tea, while being capable of offer you breathable steam that should de-clog has lots of other kinds of healing qualities that can help you feel better, though it does really depend upon what kind of tea you choose to brew and drink.

Caffeine is a no-no. Sometimes it might be easier to substitute coffee for tea or basic hot water. Do not give in for this temptation. Caffeine dehydrates the body just like alcohol does so that shows that whenever you drink (or eat) it, you will have a harder time healing your sinuses and the rest of your body too.

Everybody’s system reacts in different ways to things so make sure you check with your doctor before taking any advice in this article. What is effective for your close friend may not work for you so, if your sinus issues are extended you need to talk to your doctor.
