In June 1993 the European Commission published the medical devices directive, with the aim of putting in place laws for its member states regarding the manufacture of medical devices. The laws put in place ensure that only medical devices that are fit for purpose are sold on the European market. This article discusses the impact of the Medical Devices Directive on the area of pharmaceutical training.

The manufacture of medical devices

Any manufacturer that wants to produce medical devices that comply with the Medical Devices Directive and that are fit for purpose must understand how the device works in its intended environment. Also, manufacturers must too recognise the standards and laws that must be met during the process of productive and device testing. Manufacturers can meet these requirements through the provision of pharmaceutical training for their staff members.

Options for training

Whilst there are several ways to receive this kind of pharmaceutical training from specialist providers, there tends to be two options which are most common. In-house training is the first option, which incorporates the visit of a pharmaceutical consultant. By having this face to face contact the consultant is able to show the correct techniques to management and staff that should be used to ensure compliance with the Medical Devices Directive.
A second option that is available is for staff to attend offsite training which is provided by the consultancy firm. The information that they learn can then be passed on to other staff members once they return to work.

Looking at costs

Sending staff to training sessions held elsewhere is usually cheaper than paying for consultants to visit your production property. However, this means that you are relying on those that attend to relay what they learn to other staff members in an accurate manner. If the level of training is in an especially complex area it makes best sense to have the training done onsite so that all members off staff receive their information fisthand, increasing the likelihood of achieving compliance with the Medical Devices Directive regulations.
